what does a director not seek in a designer-director collaboration?
A collaborative relationship can mean the difference between a mediocre design and a stellar design. While you can’t just hire a designer to do your home, you can hire the best designer for a home and get the best design for your home.
It’s important to know whether or not a designer is a master of design. If a designer can’t get the job done because the designer is a master of design, then your home will be a better design.
The problem with a designer collaboration is that there will be a lot of design choices and a lot of time spent figuring out what they should do. This was a problem in the past with the “best” designers for many of the “big” design jobs, like a designer for a movie or a designer for building something from just a few concepts. It can be a huge pain when you dont have the time to spend figuring out what the best design is.
The best designers have a natural ability to take a concept and make it work in their own way. It is not too uncommon for a designer to come up with a great concept, but then to change his mind mid-project and end up with something that is better, but still different, than the previous concept. The problem is that if you don’t know what the best design is, you can end up with a concept that is better than the one you were working on.
Designing a game is a team effort. If you work on a concept, design, or game together, you should expect to get a great idea, and then to come back several months later with a design that is better than the one you started with. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s a good problem to have. If you don’t want to hear that, then start working on something else.
Just because I’ve never seen a good version of a story doesn’t mean I don’t like it. It’s just that when you see a good work, you are probably not as happy with the one you were working on.

You can’t expect a designer to be a perfectionist though. To be a great designer you must go far beyond perfection. Designers are mostly just a bunch of people who want to make a really cool game. They don’t know anything about making games.
What makes a design great, is a designer must know their craft. It’s not about who you are or what you do as a designer. It’s about knowing your thing, and not just its flaws.
