Most designers will probably say that they have a design strategy that is very similar to their job, but even the most hardcore designers will admit that there is no such a thing as a job design strategy. The only thing I’ve found that is common to designers is that they all think they know it all and that they want to work in design and marketing. This is true enough, but not because they think they are smarter than the rest of us.
I don’t know about you, but I think that this sort of job-related strategy is a myth. It’s a myth because it’s so common and because it’s such a weak excuse for designers to do well in their jobs. After all, if there is a job related strategy, then why are most designers so anxious to work in design? We should be designing, and we should be doing it well.
I think I can speak for many designers when I say: Designers are not always bad at their jobs, and many designers just aren’t as good at designing for marketing as they think they are. More often than not, designers get design thinking wrong. They get design thinking so wrong that they actually become designers themselves and never realize their own design thinking is actually bad. It’s one of the excuses I give to the designer who is trying to get hired.
Design thinking is the process of designing the product for it’s intended use. It is a bit of a misnomer because the product may not have a use, but there are ways to design that product to make you happy. This should ideally be the main purpose of the design process, because the reason that our products have a purpose is because we designed them for that purpose.
