The difference between a database and a business unit is that in a business unit you have a single company, and in a database you have multiple companies. For example, a company might have a database for the industry in which its products or services are sold, and a business unit would have a database for that company.
The problem is that you can’t be a database for the entire industry, and you can’t be a business unit (or company) for the entire industry. You can do one of these, but it will be impossible to do the other. So the database has to be tailored to the specific needs of a specific industry.
In an information base, the most advanced technology on earth is that of the network, and it has been around for quite some time. That means you can connect the entire industry to the network, but you cant connect to other businesses. That means if you’re trying to sell some product, the company is going to have a database of companies that you can connect to.
So you can target the database of companies that you represent using a database of companies that you represent. You can target your database of companies with your marketing, you can target your database of companies with your advertising, you can target your database of companies with your sales, you can target your database of companies with your client service, you can target your database of companies with your IT, you can target your database of companies with your finance, etc.

Its a problem because they aren’t building a database that you can use to represent their other companies, or that anyone else can use to represent a company. In other words, they are building a database of companies that they believe to be important to their business. That means that their database is the wrong database. They should be building a database of companies that they represent, not one that doesn’t necessarily represent them.
The goal is to build a database of companies that have no need to get their own company on the table. It should always be that way.
